Motorola unveiled its first WiMAX USB adapter, the USBw 100. This thumb drive-sized device is available in three versions to connect to WiMAX networks in each of the three bands approved for use around the world: 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, and 3.5GHz. The Motorola USBw 100 plugs directly into laptop computers to provide mobile and nomadic wireless broadband connectivity, both indoors and out. Motorola’s wi4 WiMAX USB adapter has been designed with multiple antenna technology to provide reliable, high-speed connectivity in the various and unpredictable environments where users expect service. The USBw 100 delivers increased range and higher throughput when compared with single-antenna solutions. When used with Motorola’s dual antenna DAP (Diversity Access Point)/WAP (Wireless Access Point) 400 Series, both uplink and downlink performance are significantly enhanced. The USBw is expected to be available in the fourth quarter.

Motorola also announced an addition to its Wireless Ethernet Bridge portfolio, the PTP (Point-to-Point) 200 Series. Motorola’s PTP 200 systems are designed for customers who need a wireless bridge that can perform reliably in LOS (line-of-sight) or nLOS (near line-of-sight) conditions. Operating in the 5.4GHz band, the PTP 200 Wireless Ethernet Bridges are part of Motorola’s Wireless Broadband portfolio, providing users with data rates of up to 21Mbps and line-of-sight distances of up to 5 miles. The PTP 200’s OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology provides resistance to interference and fading while providing virtually instant fade recovery. The PTP 200 is also equipped with powerful GPS synchronization capabilities that significantly reduce self-interference. In addition, DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) detects radar-based users in the band and automatically switches to a noninterfering channel. A simple network design allows PTP 200 systems to complement existing networks and integrate easily with Web-based and SNMP-based management systems, as well as the Canopy Prizm and CNUT (Canopy Network Update Tool) systems.

In addition to the aforementioned products, Motorola added a real-time location solution to the Wi-NG (Wireless Next Generation) architecture for its RF Wireless Switches. The RTLS (Real-time Location System) delivers location awareness and standards-based APIs for third-party business applications across Motorola’s indoor and outdoor WLAN infrastructure. Powered by the embedded RTLS engine, the Motorola Wi-NG architecture enables accurate location determination and presence detection capabilities for Wi-Fi-based devices, Wi-Fi-based active RFID tags, and passive RFID tags. Motorola’s location solution is both RF- and tag-agnostic, and includes built-in location determination algorithms that can integrate data from third-party location engines. An industry-standard ALE (application-level events) interface lets developers create location-based business applications using location data.
